A pedestal fan does not cool the air; it moves it. The flow of air against the skin makes a room feel cooler, without the thermometer reading changing. On many summer days, that is enough, and a fan requires no refrigerant, no outdoor unit and no installation: it is simply set up and plugged into the socket.

The Hantech pedestal fan FD-40MD

The range includes the FD-40MD floor fan from Hantech. It is 1.30 m high, around 70 cm wide and weighs 5.8 kg, so it can be carried from room to room with ease. An oscillation function swivels the head back and forth, distributing the airflow throughout the room rather than blowing air at just one spot. It is powered by a single-phase supply from a standard domestic socket.

When an air conditioner is the better choice

If the heat lingers in the room for weeks on end and even the nights bring no relief, the only solution is a unit that actually removes heat from the air. Without any structural alterations, this means a portable air conditioner; for a permanent solution, a split-system air conditioner is required. If the air is more humid than hot, a dehumidifier is the right choice.
