MC4 connectors
Stäubli coupler plugs and sockets in the MC4 and MC4-Evo 2 systems for 4 to 6 mm² and 10 mm², plus individual crimp contacts and sealing caps. Always select plugs and sockets of the same type.
MC4- Connectors link solar panels to one another and connect the string to the inverter. Stäubli’s male and female connectors are available here for conductor cross-sections of 4 to 6 mm² and 10 mm², in the MC4 and MC4-Evo 2 connector systems, along with individual crimp contacts and sealing caps.
MC4 or MC4-Evo 2
Both connector systems are manufactured by Stäubli; MC4-Evo 2 is the newer series. A plug must always be connected to a socket of the same type. According to Stäubli, mixed pairings – including with plugs from other manufacturers – are not permitted: whilst they may hold mechanically, they do not ensure a secure contact. The system installed on a system is indicated on the module’s connection cable or in the inverter’s data sheet.
Cross-sectional area and cable diameter
Each connector is designed for a specific conductor cross-section and a range of cable outer diameters, for example 4 to 6 mm² with a diameter of 5 to 6 mm. Both specifications are included in the product designation. The diameter of your cable is specified in its data sheet; if it does not match the connector, the cable gland will not provide a tight seal. For making multiple connections at once, a set of ten pairs of ‘MC4’ plugs and sockets for 4 to 6 mm² is available.
Crimp, do not solder
The contacts are crimped using the tool specific to the respective system. Crimping pliers, wire strippers and assembly wrenches can be found with the crimping pliers and the MC4-tool, whilst the cables are listed under solar cables. Sealing caps close off open plugs and sockets, for example on an unused input. Y-splitters and in-line fuses are available for connecting strands in parallel or providing individual protection.
The guide ‘Solar Cables and MC4-Connectors’ explains how solar cables and connectors fit together.
