Growatt NOAH 2000 or NEXA 2000: What is the difference?

In short: According to the data sheet, both storage units have a capacity of 2,048 Wh and can be expanded to 8,192 Wh. The NEXA 2000 has a built-in inverter, four module inputs and a connection for loads in the event of a power cut; it is suitable if you are buying a new system, wish to connect four modules directly or want to power individual devices during a power cut. The NOAH 2000 works with a separate micro inverter such as the Growatt NEO 800M-X and is suitable if you have separate storage and inverter units or wish to continue using an existing Growatt NEO.

What is the difference between NOAH 2000 and NEXA 2000?

The Growatt NOAH 2000 and the Growatt NEXA 2000 are storage units for balcony power plants with the same capacity and the same cell chemistry, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄). The difference lies in their design: the NOAH 2000 supplies direct current to a separate micro inverter, whilst the NEXA 2000 is an all-in-one unit, combining a battery, charge controller and inverter in a single housing. This is the source of most of the differences in day-to-day use.

All values on this page are taken from Growatt’s data sheets and manuals; we have not measured or tested the devices ourselves. The documents are available for download on the respective product page.

Inverter: separate or built-in?

With the NOAH 2000, the storage unit is situated between the modules and the micro inverter. The modules charge the storage unit, which supplies up to 800 W of direct current to the inverter, and only the Growatt NEO 800M-X converts this into alternating current for the socket. It is included with the NOAH 2000 kits. The manual describes how to pair the battery and the inverter via the app for the Growatt NEO series of micro inverters.

The NEXA 2000 does not require a separate inverter. The modules are connected directly to the storage unit, and a cable leads to the socket. One less device means one less cable and one fewer connection on the balcony. However, if a component fails, this affects the entire device in the case of the NEXA 2000, whereas with the NOAH 2000 it affects only the storage unit or only the inverter.

How many modules can be connected?

The NOAH 2000 has two module inputs, each recommended for up to 900 W of module power. According to the manual, four modules are connected via a Y-splitter, with two connected to each input. The NEXA 2000 has four inputs, each with a single string; four modules can therefore be connected without a Y-splitter, totalling up to 2,600 W.

Higher module output charges the storage unit faster, even on overcast days. Nevertheless, both systems supply a maximum of 800 W to the domestic grid. The special rule for plug-in solar devices applies up to an installed capacity of 2 kilowatts and an inverter capacity of 800 volt-amperes (Section 8(5a) of the EEG). Which sets fall within this scope is specified on the sets themselves.

What happens in the event of a power cut?

In the event of a power cut, neither system will perform grid feed-in, even when the storage unit is full. The NEXA 2000 also has a connection for off-grid operation: according to the data sheet, it supplies loads with up to 800 W at 230 V via this connection, for example via a power strip. According to the manual, you can switch to this mode manually, either by pressing and holding a button on the device for 3 seconds or via the app. Power is supplied only to devices connected to this socket, not to the flat.

The NOAH 2000 does not have such a connection. Anyone wishing to use electricity from the balcony storage unit during a power cut should choose the NEXA 2000.

How can the storage units be expanded?

Both systems scale up to 8,192 Wh, i.e. four times the capacity of the base unit. According to the manual, you can stack up to four units of the NOAH 2000. For the NEXA 2000, extension batteries of 2,048 Wh each are added; the manual recommends a maximum of three; the extension battery for the NEXA 2000 is available separately. According to the data sheet, the NEXA 2000 delivers a maximum of 800 W even with the extension. The extension therefore increases the duration for which the storage unit supplies power, not the power output.

Control systems and smart meters

Both storage units are set up and monitored via an app using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. With a compatible smart meter, they adjust the output to the flat’s actual consumption, rather than performing a fixed grid feed-in. Growatt specifies the Shelly 3EM and the Shelly Pro 3EM for both models. Without a smart meter, the NOAH 2000 delivers a fixed power output as per the manual – 200 W ex works – which you can adjust in the app. The relationship between zero feed-in and smart meters is explained in ‘Zero Feed-in with a Smart Meter’.

What applies to the application?

The same applies to both. Every installation must be registered in the Federal Network Agency’s market master data register within one month of commissioning (Section 5(5) MaStRV). For plug-in solar devices falling within the scope of Section 8(5a) EEG, no additional notification to the grid operator may be required. For more information, see Registering a balcony power plant.

Which storage solution is right for you?

  • You are buying new equipment and want just a few units on your balcony: NEXA 2000, with a built-in inverter. See the ‘Balcony power plants with NEXA 2000’ section for relevant sets.
  • You wish to connect four modules without a Y-splitter: NEXA 2000 with four inputs.
  • You want to operate individual devices during a power cut: NEXA 2000 with a connection for off-grid operation, up to 800 W.
  • If you already have a Growatt NEO or want to keep the storage unit and inverter separate: NOAH 2000. Sets featuring the NEO 800M-X can be found under ‘balcony power plants’ with the NOAH 2000.
  • The storage device is located in a very warm place: according to the data sheet, the NEXA 2000 is approved for use up to 55 °C, and the NOAH 2000 up to 45 °C.
