Air conditioner in the bedroom: quiet and appropriately sized
In short: In the bedroom, what matters most is how quiet the indoor unit is at its lowest setting. The quietest 9,000 BTU split-system units in the range operate at 19 dB(A); this level is sufficient for most bedrooms.

What matters in the bedroom
Interior noise level
Compare the sound pressure level of the indoor unit at its lowest setting. This is stated in the data sheet and at the top of every product card.
Night-time operation
Check whether the device has a night or sleep mode that adjusts the fan speed and temperature overnight.
Position
The indoor unit should be mounted on the wall so that the airflow is directed into the room and not directly onto the bed.
Outdoor unit
The outdoor unit is also audible. Work with a specialist contractor to plan a location at a distance from bedroom windows, including those of your neighbours.
Is 9,000 BTU suitable for your bedroom?
A guide value. It does not replace a cooling load calculation to VDI 2078 or the planning by a specialist company.
How quiet should an air conditioner in the bedroom be?
At night, every sound is more noticeable than during the day. It is therefore the sound pressure level of the indoor unit at the lowest fan speed that is decisive, not the maximum value. The lower the value in dB(A), the quieter the unit operates; even a reduction of just a few dB(A) is clearly audible.
Split air conditioners have the noisy part – the compressor – in the outdoor unit. Only the indoor unit with the fan is installed in the room. This is why they are quieter in the bedroom than portable air conditioners, where the compressor is located in the room. The guide ‘How loud is an air conditioner?’ provides figures for both types.
Split sets with 9,000 BTU cost about 500 to 850 €, incl. VAT, as of October 2026 in the range.
Frequently asked questions
Is a portable air conditioner sufficient for the bedroom?
Mobile units have the compressor in the room and are therefore significantly noisier than a split indoor unit. For quiet nights, a split unit is the better choice. The differences in figures are shown in ‘How loud is an air conditioner?’
What size do I need for my bedroom?
This depends on the floor area, insulation and sunlight. The calculator above provides a guide. A detailed explanation can be found in ‘Which air conditioner for which room size?’.
Can the system also provide heating in winter?
The split sets in the range can also be used for heating. For information on when this is a sensible alternative to the central heating system, see ‘Heating with the air conditioner’.
