Y-connectors & fuses
Y-distributors and branch connectors from Stäubli combine two modules or strings connected in parallel onto a single cable, with the currents adding together. In-line fuses rated at 15 and 20 A protect the individual strings.
Six components from Stäubli in the ‘MC4-Evo 2’ connector system, all rated for DC 1,500 V: two pre-assembled Y-splitters, a branch plug, a branch socket and in-line fuses rated at 15 and 20 A. They are located in the string cable between the modules and the inverter.
Y-splitters or branch plugs
Both designs combine two parallel circuits into a single cable. The Y-splitters are pre-assembled with 6 mm² cables 50 cm in length. Branch plugs and branch sockets do not require a cable; according to Stäubli, they are connected without the need for crimping or torque tools. Each parallel connection requires a pair – one for positive and one for negative: two plugs to one socket and two sockets to one plug. According to the data sheet, branch connectors must not be plugged directly into the inverter’s connection sockets, nor must they be disconnected whilst under load.
When a string fuse is required
The in-line fuses feature a gPV insert – i.e. a fuse for direct current from photovoltaic systems – housed in a 59 cm long 6 mm² cable. Whether a string needs to be fused depends on how many strings are running in parallel and the fuse rating specified in the module data sheet; this value also determines the choice between 15 and 20 A. The inverter’s input must be capable of handling the total current.
According to Stäubli, only genuine Stäubli connectors are permitted as counterparts. Suitable plugs and sockets can be found under ‘MC4’ connectors, cables sold by the metre under ‘Solar cables’, and installation tools under ‘Crimping pliers’ and ‘MC4’ tools.
