PV Complete Sets - PV Input Reverse Polarity Protection
A complete PV kit, often also referred to as a complete solar system kit, bundles the main components of a photovoltaic system: solar panels, a hybrid inverter and, in most kits, a battery storage unit. The kits here range from 6.8 to just over 30 kWp and are put together so that the module output, inverter and storage unit are compatible with one another.
Which system size is right for you?
The module output of the sets ranges from 6,825 to 30,225 watt-peak. The main focus is on 9 to 17 kWp; for large roofs, there are sets with around 21, 25.6 and 30, kWp. The size that suits a household depends on annual consumption, the usable roof area and how much electricity remains in the house during the day. A heat pump or an electric car significantly increases demand.
| System size | Modules in the set | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| around 6.8 to 7 kWp | 15 | 7.5 or 10,kWh |
| approx. 9.1 to 9.4 kWp | 20 | 10 kWh or none |
| around 10.9 to 11.3 kWp | 24 | 10 or 15 kWh, or none |
| around 14 kWp | 30 | 10 or 15 kWh, or none |
| around 16.7 to 16.9 kWp | 36 | 10 or 15 kWh, or none |
| around 21 kWp | 45 | 15 kWh |
| around 25.6 kWp | 55 | 15 kWh |
| around 30.2 kWp | 65 | 15 kWh |
The roof area determines the module size: the installed modules measure 1,762 × 1,134 mm, i.e. around 2 m² per module. Each kWp therefore requires a system to have a good 4 m² of pure module area; a set of 10 kWp thus requires around 43 m². Clearances from the roof edge, dormers, windows and the chimney must also be taken into account.
JA Solar and Trina modules
Around two-thirds of the sets use JA Solar modules from the JAM54D40 series with 455 or 465 W, whilst the remainder use Trina Vertex S+ modules with 465 or 470 W. All are glass-glass modules with N-type cells and a black frame, which looks more understated on dark roofs than a silver one. The manufacturers offer a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty. A module weighs between 21 and 22 kg, which is an important factor when planning the mounting structure.
Inverters and storage
All kits are configured with a three-phase hybrid inverter that connects the modules, battery and domestic mains supply in a single unit. These are predominantly Solplanet units ranging from 6 to 29.9 kW, alongside kits featuring the Growatt SPH 10000TL3 and Trina TRH. The product ranges are listed individually under hybrid inverters.
In the case of the Solplanet sets, the storage system consists of high-voltage battery modules from the Ai-HB G2 Pro series, each with a capacity of 2.56 kWh, and a battery management system (BMS). Three, four or six modules make up the 7.5, 10 and 15 kWh variants, as indicated in the product name. The Trina sets use four battery modules, each with a capacity of 2.5 kWh. For some Trina sets, the product description specifies an emergency power function; a qualified electrician will clarify how the switch-over is to be carried out in the meter cupboard.
With or without a storage unit
The complete sets with a storage unit buffer the day’s surplus for the evening. The more consumption takes place in the evening and night-time hours, the more advantageous the storage unit is compared to additional modules. Without a storage unit, the proportion of self-consumption decreases, but so does the investment. Even the complete sets without a storage unit operate with a hybrid inverter, meaning a suitable storage unit can be added at a later date.
What’s included in the set – and what isn’t
A set contains the modules, the inverter and, where specified, the battery modules including the control unit. The product description for each set lists individually which components are supplied and in what quantities. The substructure and solar cables are not included in the sets. These depend on the roof type, roof pitch and cable routing, and can be found under Substructure and PV installation materials.
Registration, connection and VAT
Before commissioning, the system must be registered with the grid operator and entered in the market master data register; the grid connection is carried out by a qualified electrician. Everything you need to know about a photovoltaic system, from choosing modules to registration, can be found in the Buying a PV System overview.
For photovoltaic systems and their essential components, no value added tax is charged where the conditions of Section 12 (3) of the German VAT Act (UStG) are met. You state during the ordering process whether they apply to you.
Frequently asked questions about complete PV kits
What size should my complete PV kit be?
The starting point is your annual consumption as shown on your electricity bill, plus any planned appliances such as a heat pump or electric car. The second limiting factor is the roof area. The kits listed here cover ranges from 6.8 to just over 30.
How much roof space does a complete PV kit require?
One module measures 1,762 × 1,134 mm, which is around 2 m². That works out at just over 4 m² of module area per kWp; for 10 kWp, this is around 43 m²; and for the largest kit with 65 modules, around 130 m² – in each case, excluding edge spacing.
Is a storage system worth it?
That depends on the pattern of consumption throughout the day. If a lot of electricity is used in the evening and at night, the storage system increases self-consumption. The sets are available with 7.5, 10 or 15 kWh; some come without storage but with a hybrid inverter for retrofitting at a later date.
Are the mounting frame and cables included in the kit?
No. The kits contain modules, inverters and, where specified, the storage unit. You select the mounting structure and solar cables to suit your roof and cable routing.
Is VAT payable on the complete PV kit?
For photovoltaic systems and their essential components, no value added tax is charged where the conditions of Section 12 (3) of the German VAT Act (UStG) are met. You state during the ordering process whether they apply to you.
Who connects the system?
A qualified electrician will carry out the grid connection and commissioning. The system will be registered with the grid operator and entered in the market master data register.
