Optimizer

A PV optimiser, also known as a power optimiser, is fitted behind an individual solar panel and regulates its operating point independently of the rest of the string. This is worthwhile where a chimney, a dormer window or a tree shades individual panels, which would otherwise reduce the yield of the entire string.

When is an optimiser worthwhile?

Without optimisers, the weakest module determines the current of the entire string. If the same modules are regularly affected by shade or dirt, an optimiser recovers yield there. It does not need to be fitted to every module: it is sufficient to equip only the affected modules. On a roof with no shade at all, however, the gain is minimal.

The BRC Power Optimizer M600-M

The range includes the BRC Power Optimizer M600-M from BRC Solar. According to the manufacturer, it handles up to 600 W of module power at an input voltage of 16 to 70 V and is designed for system voltages of up to 1,000 V. The housing meets protection rating IP68, and the operating temperature range is from −40 to +85 °C. Communication takes place via the power line (PLC), and each module can be monitored via the manufacturer’s app. BRC Solar offers a 25-year warranty.
