Balcony Solar Systems without Battery - PV Cable

A balcony power plant without a storage unit consists of solar panels, a micro inverter and the connection cable. The electricity enters the domestic grid the moment it is generated and is consumed there; any surplus that is not currently needed flows into the public grid. The sets here range from 840 to 2,000 watts peak.

800-watt grid feed-in, two or four modules

Ten of the eleven kits use an inverter which, according to the data sheet, feeds a maximum of 800 VA into the domestic grid: the Growatt NEO 800M-X or the Deye SUN-M80G4. Both have two MPP trackers, meaning they regulate two module inputs separately, and are protected against dust and temporary submersion in accordance with IP67. The kits differ primarily in the number of modules:

• Two modules with 840 to 1,000 Wp: JA Solar with 455, 460, 465 or 500 W, Trina Vertex S+ with 470 W or Solitek Blackstar with 420 W (in the Deye).
• Four modules with 1,820 to 2,000 Wp: JA Solar with 455, 460, 465 or 500 W. Two modules each are connected via a Y-splitter to one input of the inverter.

Four modules supply no more than 800 VA to the domestic grid, but reach this output earlier in the morning, for longer in the evening and more frequently on cloudy days. All modules are glass-on-glass modules with black frames.

One set is different: it combines four 465 W JA Solar modules with the Growatt NEO 2000M-X2, whose inverter, according to the data sheet, has a capacity of up to 2,000 VA. This exceeds the 800 VA limit that applies to the simplified registration process; please check with your network operator before purchasing to clarify how the set should be connected.

Scope of delivery and registration

Each set includes a five-metre-long connection cable with a Schuko plug. Mounting brackets for railings, walls or flat roofs are not included and can be found under Sub-structure; individual units are listed under micro inverters.

With a module output of up to 2 kW and an inverter output of 800 VA, a balcony power plant with non-remunerated grid feed-in falls under Section 8(5a) of the EEG, the regulation that came into force on 16 May 2024 as part of Solar Package I: it is registered in the market master data register, and no additional notification to the network operator is required. Two or four modules?

The grid feed-in remains at 800 VA. Four modules provide a higher yield during off-peak hours and when it’s cloudy, but take up twice as much space: around 1.76 × 1.13 m per module.
