Solar cables connect the modules to one another, the string to the inverter and, in storage systems, the battery to the control unit. They are exposed to the elements for decades and must withstand UV radiation, heat and frost; standard installation cable is therefore not suitable for use on the roof.

Cross-section and colour

Athilex type cables (H1Z2Z2-K) with cross-sections of 4 mm² and 6 mm² are available by the metre, in both red and black. The different colours ensure that positive and negative terminals can be distinguished on the roof and in the technical room. According to the manufacturer, the cables are rated for 1,500 V and temperatures ranging from −40 to +90 °C.

The appropriate cross-section is determined by the current and the length of the cable run. A 6 mm² cable keeps losses on long runs lower than a 4 mm² cable, but is thicker and more difficult to install. The inverter’s data sheet also specifies the cross-sections compatible with its connections. A green-and-yellow 16 mm² cable is provided for equipotential bonding between the module frames and the substructure.

By the metre or pre-assembled

Cables sold by the metre are cut to length and fitted with connectors at both ends, which are then crimped. Pre-assembled cables save this step: a 4 mm² cable from Stäubli, 3 metres long, with a Y-splitter that combines two modules at a single input, and in-line fuses rated at 15 and 20 A for each individual string.

In addition, there are cables designed for specific devices:

  • 5-metre Schuko connection cables for micro inverters from APSystems, Deye (SUN-M80G4) and Growatt (NEO 800 and NEO 1600M-X)
  • Connection and parallel cables for the Growatt ARK storage units (for MOD-XH, SPH and SPF) with lengths of 2 to 2.5 m
  • Cable sets for the SAJ BC2-HV1 storage units, 2 and 3 m long

With these cables, the exact model designation of the device is important. A Schuko cable for a micro inverter will only fit its output plug, whilst a storage cable will only fit the series for which it is designed.

Connectors and tools

The connectors at both ends must always be from the same family; mixing different types will not maintain a reliable contact pressure. Crimping pliers, wire strippers and the appropriate installation spanner are listed under the tools for MC4 connectors. The MC4 plugs and sockets themselves, along with the other materials, are listed under PV installation materials, whilst the compatible devices are the micro inverters and energy storage units.

For photovoltaic systems and their essential components, no value added tax is charged where the conditions of Section 12 (3) of the German VAT Act (UStG) are met. You state during the ordering process whether they apply to you.

4 mm² or 6 mm²: Which solar cable do I need?

That depends on the current and the length of the cable run. For long cable runs, 6 mm² minimises power losses. You should also check what cross-section the connections on your inverter can accommodate.

Why are solar cables red and black?

The colours indicate positive and negative. This prevents mix-ups when connecting to the inverter.

Can I buy solar cables by the metre?

Yes. Athilex cables are sold by the metre. The connectors are then crimped on using the connector system’s tool.
